My GNU/Linux Page One
|
This page I have built using GNU/Linux OpenOffice.Org Writer |
I have used the GNU/Linux Operating System (OS) for about four years, at present I use S.U.S.E.
The Linux Kernel was developed by Linus Torvalds early in the 1990s. Richard Stallman and other men had been working on the GNU system which is part of Linux system. That's a broad description which I hope to expand on in a later page. It is an Open Source System which very briefly means it can be worked on and edited by anyone with the ability but all changes must be known by all other persons working on the OS. The various types of Linux come as what is referred to as a Distribution. Below are the names of seven Distributions of Linux. Mandrake has been changed to Mandriva and if you you want to know why the name change this site will tell you.

Debian |
SUSE |
Corel |
Turbolinux |
|
Red Hat |
Mandriva |
Slackware |
Xandros |
At present (March 2004) I'm using Mandrake V9. It cost me nothing other than the cost of the computer magazine which was about $15.00 in 2003. There are six CD ROMs in the magazine, three for Red Hat V 8.0 and two for this Mandrake V9.0.
Software that is "bundled" with most distributions is quite extensive which means about a hundred. The main Applications that I use are, OpenOffice.Org Writer, Mozilla, Galeon, Evolution, X-CD-Roast, K Edit, XPDF, GPhoto, The Gimp and others. I have four Vertial X Windows that I can switch between which is very handy. There are many features that Linux has had for years that MSoft have finally put some in their OS such as MS XP. Of course as with any OS there are some problems installing the Linux OS' but these are being ironed out/fixed.

Above are
two screen captures with just a few of the windows of applications I
use in Mandrake.
In the background at the top right can be seen
the desktop in a dark purple colour and seven Icons.
At the bottom
can be seen what MS call the Taskbar. It
has many shortcut icons showing.
